Title: Nowhere Ranch
Author: Heidi Cullinan
Publisher: Loose Id
Length: Novel / 130 pgs
Buy the book: Publisher

Blurb:
Roe Davis is a man who works hard, keeps to himself, and never mixes business with pleasure — until he takes a weekend away from his new job at Nowhere Ranch and runs into the owner at the only gay bar for two hundred miles. Getting involved with the boss is a bad idea, but Travis Loving is hard to say no to, especially when it turns out their kinks line up like a pair of custom-cut rails. As Loving points out, so long as this is sex on the side, no interfering with the job, they could make it work.
The truth is, there’s good reason Roe never settles down and always spends his birthdays and holidays celebrating alone. Shut out in the cold by his family years ago, Roe survived by declaring he didn’t need a home. As his affair with Loving grows into more than just sex, Roe finds out what happens when he stays put a little bit too long: the past always catches up with you. Eventually, even a loner gets lonely, and home will grow up through whatever cracks you leave open for it — even in a place called Nowhere.

Title: I Once Had a Master
Author: John Preston
Publisher: Cleis Press
Length: Collection, 220 pgs
Buy the book: Amazon

Blurb:
John Preston brings it back to the basics: a hand on a neck, a boot that needs a spit shine, a trick who leaves with bruises and sweet memories. In books such as the S/M classic Mr. Benson, Preston explored power exchange in all its battered beauty. The sex stories in I Once Had a Master combine a hard-core sensibility with rare psychological insight.
In “Authenticity,” a top turns down two fawning bottoms in full leather regalia in favor of the sweet-faced novice who offers genuine surrender. In “Pedro,” a college boy has a summer affair with a truck driver and finds himself flirting with other men just to provoke his lover’s rage. The lonely bottom in “Interludes” develops his body to perfection, then seeks out the Daddy who will cherish this gift.

The Year in Review
So TDB officially opened its doors on 1/18/2010 and has had a pretty solid year. At least we think so. Although as with any venture we started with our ideas bigger than our reading time, we’ve been steadily plugging along reviewing we hope a wide variety of books in the GLBTQ genre. We didn’t hit all of the goals we set for ourselves but we also never wanted to be a massive site. We’re happy to be a quiet corner of solid reviews that span the genre with thoughtful, careful reviews. So let’s see how we did in accomplishing that goal.
In the past year we’ve published 21 “rambling” posts and 223 reviews by 10 different reviewers.
Of those reviews, they break down the following way:
1 star reviews – 4
1.5 star reviews – 1
2 star reviews – 8
2.5 star reviews – 7
3 star reviews – 27
3.5 star reviews – 45
4 star reviews – 77
4.5 star reviews – 38
5 star reviews – 16
The average rating on TDB is 3.7.
We’ve reviewed:
8 bisexual titles
193 gay titles
24 lesbian titles
2 queer titles
7 transgendered titles
Erotica still makes up the majority of books coming in at 138 out of 222 reviews – we all like our porn – but we do offer nearly 40% of non-erotica book reviews. Hopefully we can get this even higher and more diverse in the coming year.
One of the goals starting this site was to offer reviews for books that are outside the m/m erotica romance genre. While we still have to work on that, I think TDB balances both the guilty pleasure books we love and those gems that may be overlooked.
So where do we improve? We have several ideas about what we’d like to improve upon and work on in the coming year but this is a perfect time to get some feedback from our readers.
Feel free to take the anonymous poll or leave us some feedback (which we love!).
Thank you and here’s to another successful year.
